Otworkowy spacer po Manhatanie

The idea popped into my mind several years ago. A picture of the wire rope network on Brooklyn Bridge turned out to be the seed of my desire to shoot in New York. It was more than a plan to go there, I felt deeply attracted by the city, still do.
Although I live in a quiet corner of a small village in Germany I wasn't put off by the noise, the crowds, the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. I actually kind of enjoyed all of this whereas the noise level at the Ground Zero construction site was almost unbearable. But again and again I was fascinated when I let my gaze wander along the gigantic frontages - amazed how wilderness-like certain areas of Central Park appear - thrilled by the architectural beauty of the Chrysler Building viewed at close range - put in a pensive mood by the omnipresent aura of quite aggressive patriotism in Downtown - put in a pensive mood by the sight of the damaged WTC globe sculpture now being exposed in the Battery Park - in general ambivalently astounded by the metamorphosis of the Lenape island Mannahatta - "land of many hills" - to what I now experienced as Manhattan - nonetheless enthused about the subway line division in local and express & pleasantly surprised how peaceful a late dusk walk through Harlem can feel - overwhelmed by the unselfishness of a black student who brought some guy to cough the light meter up he had just stolen from me - tranquilized by the beneficial normality of Greenwich Village - shocked when my camera fell on the adamantine floor of Grand Central Terminal's Main Concourse - and after all partly brought to my knees by the distances to be covered by foot carrying a backpack.
This is the abridgement of what Manhattan was for me. It's hard to describe this city more profoundly after a stay of only one week. I'm aware that this is a place with bright light and deep shadow. Whatever it may be to the visitor, it'll never be boring.
Manhattan's largely vertical architecture also inspired me to take pictures that don't show any top or bottom, no left, no right - but this is another project to be continued in other cities ;-).
